Iodoform

Iodoform, or triiodomethane (CHI₃), is a yellow crystalline organoiodine compound. It was formerly used as an antiseptic and is produced in the characteristic iodoform test for methyl ketones.

Iodoform reaction: A reaction that converts methyl ketones into carboxylate salts and yellow triiodomethane using iodine and base. This reaction produces iodoform and gives the compound its familiar analytical role.
Iodoform test: A qualitative chemical test that detects methyl ketones and certain compounds oxidizable to them by forming yellow iodoform. The yellow precipitate is the test's visible positive result.
Triiodomethane: The systematic name for CHI₃, a methane derivative in which three hydrogen atoms are replaced by iodine. Triiodomethane is the chemical name for iodoform.
Chloroform: A colorless liquid haloalkane with the formula CHCl₃. It is the chlorine analogue of iodoform but differs greatly in physical state and use.
Haloform reaction: A reaction in which a methyl ketone is cleaved by halogen and base to form a haloform and a carboxylate. Iodoform formation is the iodine-specific version of this broader reaction.
Qualitative analysis: Chemical analysis that identifies substances or functional groups rather than measuring their amounts. The iodoform test is a classic qualitative test for particular carbonyl-related structures.
Haloalkane: An organic compound in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by halogen atoms. Iodoform belongs to this family of halogen-substituted organic compounds.
Bromoform: A dense, colorless-to-pale-yellow liquid with the formula CHBr₃. It is the bromine analogue of iodoform within the haloform family.
Methyl ketone: A ketone whose carbonyl carbon is bonded to a methyl group. This structural feature enables the characteristic iodoform reaction.
Antiseptic: A substance applied to living tissue to inhibit or kill microorganisms. Iodoform was historically applied to wounds for its antiseptic action.
