Ionian Revolt

A rebellion from 499 to 493 BCE in which Greek cities in Ionia and Cyprus challenged Persian rule, with support from Athens and Eretria, before Persian forces suppressed it.

Aristagoras: A Greek ruler of Miletus who helped ignite the Ionian Revolt after failing to capture Naxos for Persia. His reversal against Persian authority turned a failed expedition into an organized rebellion.
Ionian Greeks: Greek-speaking communities traditionally associated with Ionia and other parts of the eastern Mediterranean. The revolt drew its principal participants from Greek cities along Asia Minor’s western coast.
Darius I: Achaemenid king of Persia from 522 to 486 BCE who expanded and reorganized the empire. He ordered the campaigns that suppressed the revolt and later pursued punishment of Athens and Eretria.
Greco-Persian Wars: A series of conflicts in the fifth century BCE between the Achaemenid Persian Empire and Greek states. The revolt helped trigger the Persian invasions that began the wider conflict.
Burning of Sardis: The 498 BCE destruction of much of Sardis by Ionian rebels and their Athenian and Eretrian allies. The attack escalated the revolt and gave Darius I a reason to punish Athens and Eretria.
Ionia: An ancient region on the western coast of Asia Minor, home to Greek-speaking cities including Miletus and Ephesus. Persian rule over Ionia formed the political setting for the uprising.
Megabates: A Persian commander who joined Aristagoras in the failed expedition against Naxos. His conflict with Aristagoras during the expedition helped set the revolt’s origins in motion.
Persian expedition against Greece (492 BCE): A Persian campaign led by Mardonius that reasserted control in Thrace and sought to extend Persian influence in Greece. It followed the revolt and formed the first stage of Darius I’s response against mainland Greece.
Battle of Lade: A 494 BCE naval battle near Miletus in which the Persian fleet defeated the Ionian rebels. The defeat broke the rebels’ naval power and opened the way for Miletus’s capture.
Naxos expedition: An unsuccessful Persian-backed campaign to capture Naxos, led by Aristagoras and the Persian commander Megabates around 500 BCE. Its failure left Aristagoras indebted and politically vulnerable, prompting his break with Persia.
