Iqta

An iqta was an assignment of revenue from a specified territory to an official or soldier, usually in return for service. It generally granted the right to collect taxes, not ownership of the land.

Iqtadar: An official or commander assigned the right to collect revenue from an iqta. The iqtadar exercised the revenue-collection rights that defined an iqta.
Abbasid Caliphate: An Islamic caliphate that ruled much of the Middle East from 750 to 1258. Revenue assignments resembling iqta developed under Abbasid rule before later systems expanded them.
Timar: A grant of state revenue in the Ottoman Empire, commonly assigned to cavalrymen for service. The Ottoman timar resembles iqta but developed within a distinct administrative and military system.
Centralization: The concentration of authority and administrative control in a central government. Iqta systems let rulers delegate collection while retaining claims over assigned revenues.
Kharaj: A land tax levied in Islamic states, especially on agricultural land. Kharaj was among the revenues an iqta holder could be assigned to collect.
Seljuk Empire: A medieval Turkic-Persian empire that governed much of western Asia from the eleventh century. Seljuk rulers used iqta assignments to support officials and military forces.
Jagir: A South Asian assignment of revenue from a territory, often granted to an official or military servant. Jagir is a later and regionally distinct institution often compared with iqta.
Decentralization: The distribution of political or administrative authority away from a central government. Local revenue control could strengthen provincial officials even when assignments remained revocable.
Muqti: A provincial governor or revenue assignee in several medieval Islamic states. The title names an office often associated with administering an iqta.
Nizam al-Mulk: A Persian vizier who served the Seljuk sultans Alp Arslan and Malik-Shah. His political writings describe the administrative concerns surrounding Seljuk revenue assignments.
