Iranian provinces

Iran is divided into provinces, its first-level administrative units. Each province is subdivided into counties and governed by a governor-general appointed by the central government.

County (Iran): A county is an administrative division of an Iranian province, generally comprising a central district and other districts. Counties are the principal subdivisions beneath each province.
Tehran Province: Tehran Province is an Iranian province centered on the national capital and the country’s largest urban region. Its metropolitan scale distinguishes it from most other provinces.
Administrative divisions of Iran: Iran’s administrative divisions are the territorial units through which the national government organizes local administration. Provinces sit at the top of this wider administrative hierarchy.
Government of Iran: The Government of Iran is the national system of executive institutions established under the Islamic Republic’s constitution. Provincial administrations operate within this national governing structure.
Province of Alborz: Alborz is a north-central Iranian province created in 2010 from territory formerly belonging to Tehran Province. Its creation is a recent example of provincial boundary change.
District (Iran): A district is an administrative division within an Iranian county, comprising one or more cities and rural districts. Districts form the level below counties in the provincial hierarchy.
Sistan and Baluchestan Province: Sistan and Baluchestan is a southeastern Iranian province bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan. Its border location and large area illustrate the system’s regional diversity.
Iranian constitutional revolution: The Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1905–1911 established a constitution and parliament, limiting absolute royal rule. Its political reforms helped reshape modern state administration.
Iranian Parliament: The Iranian Parliament, or Islamic Consultative Assembly, is Iran’s unicameral legislative body. Provincial constituencies help determine parliamentary representation.
Province of South Khorasan: South Khorasan is an eastern Iranian province established in 2004 from part of the former Khorasan Province. Its separation illustrates how large provinces can be divided.
