Iraq disarmament crisis

The prolonged dispute over Iraq’s compliance with United Nations obligations to disclose and eliminate weapons of mass destruction after the 1991 Gulf War.

United Nations Special Commission: A United Nations body established in 1991 to inspect and oversee the dismantling of Iraq’s prohibited weapons programs. UNSCOM conducted the inspections at the center of the postwar compliance dispute.
Gulf War: The 1990–1991 conflict in which a US-led coalition expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. The war’s ceasefire conditions imposed Iraq’s initial disarmament duties.
Hans Blix: A Swedish diplomat who led UNMOVIC from 2000 and reported on Iraq’s inspections to the Security Council. His 2002–2003 reports became pivotal evidence in the final prewar dispute.
Operation Desert Fox: A four-day US–British bombing campaign against Iraq in December 1998. It followed the breakdown of inspections and marked a sharp escalation of enforcement.
