Irish language revival

Efforts to increase knowledge, everyday use, and intergenerational transmission of Irish, especially since the nineteenth century, through education, public institutions, and community initiatives.

Irish-medium education: Education in which Irish is the principal language of instruction. Irish-medium schools build fluency by making Irish the language of daily learning.
Gaelic League: An organization founded in 1893 to promote the Irish language and Gaelic culture. The League turned language preservation into a mass cultural movement.
Conradh na Gaeilge: The Irish-language name of the Gaelic League, founded in 1893 to promote Irish. Its branches and classes organized language learning across Ireland and abroad.
Language shift: A process in which a community increasingly uses one language instead of another. The revival seeks to reverse the long shift from Irish toward English.
Official Languages Act 2003: An Irish statute establishing duties for public bodies concerning the use of Irish. The Act translated some revival goals into enforceable public-service obligations.
Gaeltacht: Regions in Ireland officially designated as Irish-speaking areas. The Gaeltacht is central to sustaining community use and intergenerational transmission.
Douglas Hyde: Irish scholar and cultural activist who co-founded the Gaelic League and became Ireland’s first president. Hyde’s nonpolitical cultural nationalism helped launch organized language revival.
Pádraig Pearse: Irish teacher, writer, and nationalist who founded St Enda’s School and took part in the 1916 Rising. Pearse linked Irish-language education with a broader vision of national renewal.
Irish language: A Goidelic language native to Ireland and one of the country’s official languages. The revival is a social and political effort centered on this language itself.
