Iron(III) nitrate

Iron(III) nitrate is an inorganic salt composed of Fe³⁺ cations and nitrate anions, with the formula Fe(NO₃)₃. It commonly occurs as a hydrated, deliquescent crystalline solid.

Iron(III) ion: The Fe³⁺ cation, formed when an iron atom loses three electrons. Its +3 charge determines the three nitrate ions in each formula unit.
Hydrolysis: A reaction in which a substance reacts with water, often changing the solution’s acidity. Hydrated Fe³⁺ ions acidify water through hydrolysis.
Oxidizing agent: A substance that accepts electrons from another substance in a chemical reaction. Nitrate can serve as an oxidizing component in reactions involving this salt.

Oxidation state: A formal charge assigned to an atom under a set of chemical bookkeeping rules. Iron’s +3 oxidation state distinguishes this salt from iron(II) nitrate.
Deliquescence: The uptake of atmospheric water vapor until a solid dissolves in the absorbed water. Its strong affinity for moisture can turn exposed crystals into a solution.
