Irrigation

Irrigation is the artificial application of water to land or crops to support plant growth. It supplements or replaces rainfall when natural water supply is insufficient or poorly timed.

Surface irrigation: A method that moves water across fields by gravity, commonly through furrows, borders, or basins. Gravity carries water over the field without pressurized delivery.
Groundwater: Water stored beneath Earth's surface in soil pores and rock formations. Wells tap groundwater for irrigation where rivers or rainfall cannot meet demand.
Waterlogging: The saturation of soil with water that restricts air available to plant roots. Poor drainage can leave irrigated fields saturated and impair crop growth.
Rain-fed agriculture: Crop production that relies primarily on rainfall rather than applied irrigation water. It shows the alternative where farming depends on precipitation instead of managed deliveries.
Qanat: An underground channel system that conveys groundwater by gravity from upland aquifers to settlements or fields. Qanats are a durable ancient technology for bringing water to farmland in dry regions.
Drip irrigation: A method that delivers water slowly through emitters near plant roots. Localized delivery can reduce evaporation and runoff compared with broad field watering.
Canal: An artificial waterway constructed to convey water for transport, drainage, or irrigation. Canals carry water from rivers or reservoirs to agricultural districts.
Soil salinity: The accumulation of soluble salts in soil to levels that hinder plant growth. Irrigation water can leave salts behind as it evaporates or drains away.
Dryland farming: Crop production in arid or semi-arid regions that conserves soil moisture and generally avoids irrigation. Its moisture-conservation strategies offer an alternative to supplying crops with diverted water.
Aflaj irrigation systems of Oman: Traditional Omani water systems that convey groundwater or spring water through channels to communities and fields. These systems demonstrate long-standing communal management of scarce irrigation water.
