Irving Thalberg

Irving Thalberg (1899–1936) was an American film producer and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer executive who helped shape Hollywood’s studio-era production system and screen storytelling.

Louis B. Mayer: An American film executive who led Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for much of its studio-era heyday. As MGM’s chief, Mayer gave Thalberg authority over production while competing with him for control.
Studio system: A vertically integrated model in which film studios controlled production, distribution, and often exhibition. Thalberg’s production methods operated inside Hollywood’s broader system of centralized studio power.
Grand Hotel: A 1932 MGM drama following intersecting lives at a Berlin hotel, directed by Edmund Goulding. Thalberg oversaw this multiple-star production, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
