Isaiah Berlin

Isaiah Berlin (1909–1997) was a Latvian-born British philosopher and historian of ideas. His essays on liberty, value pluralism, and political thought made him a major liberal thinker of the twentieth century.

Negative and positive liberty: A distinction between freedom from interference and freedom understood as self-direction or self-mastery. Berlin’s 1958 lecture made this distinction central to modern debates about political freedom.

Value pluralism: The view that genuine human values can be multiple, incompatible, and not reducible to a single ranking. Berlin argued that conflicts among values can be real and have no perfect resolution.
The Hedgehog and the Fox: Isaiah Berlin’s 1953 essay contrasting thinkers who organize ideas around one principle with those who pursue many. Berlin used this contrast to interpret Leo Tolstoy’s conflicted view of history.
Johann Gottfried Herder: An eighteenth-century German philosopher who emphasized the historical and cultural particularity of human life. Berlin presented Herder as a critic of universal schemes that flatten cultural difference.
Negative liberty: Freedom understood as a protected area in which a person can act without interference from others. Berlin’s defense of this sense set limits on how far political authority may intrude.
John Gray: A British political philosopher known for work on liberalism, pluralism, and the limits of political progress. Gray developed a prominent later critique of liberalism drawing on Berlin’s value pluralism.
