Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a Bengali educator, writer, and social reformer who championed women’s education and helped secure legal recognition for Hindu widow remarriage in British India.

Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act, 1856: A British Indian law that legalized the remarriage of Hindu widows and addressed the legal consequences of remarriage. Vidyasagar’s petitions and public advocacy helped build support for this landmark law.
