Iskandar Muda

Iskandar Muda was sultan of Aceh from 1607 to 1636. His reign brought the sultanate its greatest territorial expansion and political power.

Aceh Sultanate: A Muslim sultanate based in northern Sumatra that became a major power in maritime Southeast Asia. Iskandar Muda ruled this sultanate during its peak of territorial reach and political influence.
Aceh navy: The maritime forces maintained by the Aceh Sultanate to defend its territory and project power. Naval strength enabled Iskandar Muda to attack rival ports and enforce Aceh’s reach across the strait.
Alauddin Riayat Syah al-Kahar: A sixteenth-century sultan of Aceh associated with the sultanate’s early expansion and consolidation. His earlier campaigns and state-building preceded the power Iskandar Muda inherited.
Taj ul-Alam: The sultana of Aceh who ruled from 1641 to 1675 after the death of Iskandar Thani. Her accession after Iskandar Muda’s successor illustrates the later role of women in Aceh’s monarchy.

Iskandar Thani: The sultan of Aceh from 1636 to 1641 and successor to Iskandar Muda. His brief reign followed Iskandar Muda and continued the dynasty’s political transition.
Portuguese Malacca: The Portuguese colonial possession centered on Malacca from its conquest in 1511 until 1641. Aceh’s repeated attacks challenged this Portuguese stronghold and its control of regional commerce.
Pepper trade: The production and exchange of pepper, a high-value spice traded across the Indian Ocean and beyond. Pepper exports furnished wealth that supported Aceh’s court, commerce, and military campaigns.
