Islamic astronomy

Islamic astronomy comprises astronomical scholarship developed across the medieval Islamic world, combining observation, mathematical modeling, instrument-making, and practical applications such as timekeeping and determining prayer directions.

Astrolabe: An instrument that represents the celestial sphere and supports calculations of time, altitude, and direction. Astronomers used astrolabes to measure celestial altitudes and solve practical problems.
House of Wisdom: A scholarly institution associated with the Abbasid court in Baghdad, known for translation and research. Baghdad’s courtly scholarship supported the translation and study of astronomical works.
Al-Battani: A ninth- and tenth-century astronomer whose observations refined values for the solar year and other parameters. His careful measurements improved astronomical constants used in later tables.
Maragha Observatory: A major thirteenth-century observatory in Iran, associated with Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and systematic astronomical research. Its instruments and research community exemplified organized observational astronomy.
Geocentrism: The family of models that places Earth at or near the center of the cosmos. Most medieval Islamic astronomical models retained Earth-centered arrangements while revising their mathematics.
Zij: A table-based astronomical handbook containing data and procedures for calculating celestial positions and related quantities. Zij handbooks made observational parameters usable in repeatable calculations.
Ptolemy: A Greco-Roman astronomer whose geocentric system and mathematical works shaped astronomy for centuries. His Almagest became a central source for Arabic-language astronomical scholarship.
Al-Sufi: A tenth-century Persian astronomer known for a detailed account of stars and constellations. His Book of Fixed Stars combined inherited catalogues with observational corrections.
Samarkand Observatory: A fifteenth-century observatory founded under Ulugh Beg in Samarkand, famed for its large sextant and star catalogue. It joined monumental instruments with sustained measurement and scholarly collaboration.
Heliocentrism: A model that places the Sun at the center of the planetary system. It marks a later structural alternative to the geocentric frameworks studied by medieval astronomers.
