Islamic State of Afghanistan

The Islamic State of Afghanistan was Afghanistan’s official name under the governments established in 1992 and restored in 2001, before the country became the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Fall of Kabul (1992): The 1992 capture of Kabul by mujahideen factions that ended the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. It brought the mujahideen government that proclaimed the Islamic State of Afghanistan to power.
Northern Alliance: A coalition of Afghan factions that opposed the Taliban and controlled parts of Afghanistan before 2001. It preserved the Islamic State government’s claim to authority during Taliban rule.
Islamic Republic of Afghanistan: The Afghan republic established by the 2004 constitution and governed until the Taliban takeover in 2021. It replaced the Islamic State as Afghanistan’s official name after the post-2001 transition.
Islamic State of Afghanistan (1992–1996): The mujahideen-led Afghan government established in 1992 and driven from Kabul by the Taliban in 1996. This was the first period in which Afghanistan officially used the name.
Democratic Republic of Afghanistan: The Afghan state governed by the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan from 1978 to 1992. Its collapse created the opening for the Islamic State's establishment.
Taliban: An Afghan Islamist movement that governed most of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. The Taliban displaced the Islamic State government from Kabul but did not extinguish its rival claim.

Islamic State of Afghanistan (2001–2004): The Afghan government restored in Kabul after the Taliban’s fall and replaced by the Islamic Republic in 2004. This was the name’s second, transitional period.
Soviet–Afghan War: The 1979–1989 war between Soviet and Afghan government forces and Afghan resistance groups. The war weakened the preceding state and empowered factions that later governed under this name.
Afghan Civil War (1992–1996): The conflict among Afghan factions that followed the fall of the communist government and preceded Taliban rule. Factional fighting fractured the government established under the Islamic State name.
