Islamization of Central Asia

Islamization of Central Asia was the gradual adoption of Islam by the region’s peoples and states, beginning with the Arab conquests and continuing through trade, political change, and Sufi networks.

Umayyad conquest of Transoxiana: The Umayyad Caliphate’s eighth-century campaigns that brought Transoxiana under Muslim rule. These campaigns established the first durable Muslim political presence south of the Oxus.
Rashidun Caliphate: The first caliphate, ruled by Muhammad’s successors from 632 to 661. Its expansion brought Muslim rule toward the eastern Iranian frontier before the major Central Asian campaigns.
Ismail Samani: A ninth-century ruler of the Samanid dynasty who made Bukhara his capital. His reign helped consolidate a powerful Muslim state in Transoxiana.
Transoxiana: The historical region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, centered on cities such as Samarkand and Bukhara. It was the main setting for early Muslim conquest and Samanid-era consolidation.
Islamic Golden Age: A period of flourishing scholarship and cultural production across parts of the medieval Islamic world. Central Asian cities and scholars became contributors to wider Islamic intellectual life.
Battle of Talas: A 751 battle in which Abbasid and allied forces defeated Tang China near the Talas River. It marked a shift in regional power, though it did not by itself convert Central Asia.
Qutayba ibn Muslim: An Umayyad general who led campaigns in Transoxiana in the early eighth century. His conquests created a lasting foothold, without making the population immediately Muslim.
Ahmad Yasawi: A twelfth-century Turkic Sufi poet and teacher associated with Yasawiyya. His teaching tradition carried Islamic devotion into Turkic-speaking communities.
Zoroastrianism: An Iranian religion centered on the teachings of Zoroaster and the worship of Ahura Mazda. It was among the established religious traditions encountered as Muslim rule expanded.
Persian literature: Literary works composed in Persian, including poetry, prose, and historical writing. Muslim courts in the region helped sustain Persian as a major literary language.
