Island of Montreal

An island in the Saint Lawrence River in southwestern Quebec, home to Montreal and several surrounding municipalities. It is the largest island in the Hochelaga Archipelago.

Saint Lawrence River: A major river flowing from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean through Quebec. The river surrounds much of the island and connects it to the Great Lakes.
St. Lawrence Iroquoians: Indigenous peoples who lived along the Saint Lawrence River when Europeans first explored the region. Their villages, including Hochelaga, stood on the island before French colonization.
Port of Montreal: A major inland port on the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, Quebec. The island’s riverfront location supports a port that connects inland trade with ocean shipping.
Île Jésus: An island in the Rivière des Prairies, north of the Island of Montreal, occupied largely by Laval. It lies just beyond the island’s northern water boundary.
Ottawa River: A major river forming part of the boundary between Ontario and Quebec before joining the Saint Lawrence River. Its mouth meets the Saint Lawrence near the island’s western end.
Hochelaga (village): A sixteenth-century St. Lawrence Iroquoian village visited by Jacques Cartier in 1535. Cartier located this village on the island’s slopes near Mount Royal.
Montreal Metro: A rapid-transit system serving Montreal and several neighboring municipalities. Its network connects dense island neighborhoods across municipal boundaries.
Île Perrot: An island in southwestern Quebec, west of the Island of Montreal, divided among several municipalities. It belongs to the same regional island landscape but is a separate island.
Hochelaga Archipelago: An island group in southwestern Quebec centered on the confluence of the Ottawa and Saint Lawrence rivers. The Island of Montreal is the archipelago’s largest island.
Jacques Cartier: A French explorer who traveled the Saint Lawrence River during the sixteenth century. His 1535 account describes the village of Hochelaga on the island.
