Isle of Man
The Isle of Man is an island in the Irish Sea and a self-governing Crown dependency, with its own parliament and legal system.
Crown dependency: A self-governing territory linked to the British Crown but not part of the United Kingdom. This constitutional status defines the Isle of Man’s relationship with the British Crown and the UK.
Kingdom of the Isles: A medieval Norse-Gaelic maritime kingdom that encompassed the Hebrides and, at times, the Isle of Man. The island was a major center of power within this Norse-Gaelic realm.
Lieutenant governor of the Isle of Man: The Crown’s representative on the Isle of Man, appointed by the monarch on the advice of the UK government. The office represents the Crown within the island’s constitutional arrangements.
Isle of Man TT: An annual motorcycle road-racing event held on closed public roads across the Isle of Man. The race is the island’s best-known sporting event and draws international visitors.
United Kingdom: A sovereign state comprising England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Isle of Man is not part of the UK, despite its close constitutional and practical ties.
Irish Sea: The sea between Great Britain and Ireland, connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the North Channel and St George’s Channel. The island lies centrally in this sea, between Great Britain and Ireland.
Godred Crovan: A Norse-Gaelic ruler who established a dynasty over the Kingdom of the Isles in the late eleventh century. His dynasty ruled the Isle of Man and shaped its medieval political history.
Chief Minister of the Isle of Man: The head of the Isle of Man’s government, selected by Tynwald and appointed by the lieutenant governor. The chief minister leads the island’s elected government and executive policy.
Manx pound: The Isle of Man’s local currency, issued at parity with the British pound sterling. The island issues its own notes and coins, though they are not legal tender in the UK.
Channel Islands: An archipelago in the English Channel containing the Crown dependencies of Jersey and Guernsey. Like the Isle of Man, the islands are self-governing Crown dependencies outside the UK.
