Ismail al-Jazari

Ismail al-Jazari was a 12th-century Muslim engineer and inventor whose illustrated treatise documented automata, water clocks, pumps, and other mechanical devices.

The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices: A 13th-century illustrated Arabic treatise by al-Jazari describing mechanical devices and their construction. This book preserves the designs and instructions through which al-Jazari’s engineering is chiefly known.
Elephant clock: An elaborate water clock whose moving figures and basin mark the passage of time. It is al-Jazari’s best-known clock, combining a water-driven regulator with symbolic figures.
Artuqid dynasty: A Turkoman dynasty that ruled parts of Anatolia and northern Mesopotamia from the 11th to 15th centuries. Al-Jazari served Artuqid rulers in Diyarbakir while designing and documenting machines.
Water pump: A machine that moves water by mechanical action from one place or level to another. Al-Jazari’s pumps show how his mechanical principles served practical water supply.
Water clock: A timekeeping device that measures elapsed time through the regulated movement of water. Several al-Jazari designs use water flow and moving indicators to display time.
Castle clock: A monumental water-powered clock described by al-Jazari, with moving figures and astronomical displays. Its multiple indicators demonstrate how his clocks could combine timekeeping and spectacle.
Diyarbakir: A historic city in southeastern Turkey, known in medieval sources as Amid. The Artuqid court at Diyarbakir was the setting for much of al-Jazari’s engineering work.
Double-acting pump: A pump that delivers fluid during both forward and return strokes of its piston mechanism. His suction pump uses a crank-driven piston arrangement to raise water continuously.
Gear train: A linked set of gears that transmits rotation while changing speed, torque, or direction. Gears translate motion between components in several mechanisms documented by al-Jazari.
Musical boat: A waterborne automaton carrying mechanical musicians that perform through a timed mechanism. This design shows al-Jazari applying mechanical sequencing to musical entertainment.
