Isopentane

Isopentane, or 2-methylbutane, is a branched-chain alkane with molecular formula C₅H₁₂. It is one of three structural isomers of pentane.

Alkane: A hydrocarbon whose carbon atoms are connected by single bonds. Isopentane belongs to this saturated-hydrocarbon family.
Boiling point: The temperature at which a liquid’s vapor pressure equals the surrounding pressure. Isopentane boils near 28 °C, making it highly volatile at ordinary temperatures.
Gasoline: A volatile liquid-fuel mixture used primarily in spark-ignition engines. Isopentane can occur in gasoline and contributes volatile, high-octane components.
Flammability: The ability of a substance to ignite and sustain combustion under specified conditions. Isopentane’s vapor can ignite readily when mixed with air.
Structural isomerism: The phenomenon in which compounds share a molecular formula but differ in atom connectivity. Isopentane has the same formula as two pentane isomers but a different carbon skeleton.

Pentane: An alkane with molecular formula C₅H₁₂, commonly denoting the straight-chain isomer n-pentane. Its unbranched structure contrasts with isopentane’s single branch.
Combustion: A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts rapidly with an oxidant, releasing heat. Isopentane burns in oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water when combustion is complete.
