Isoperimetric problem

An optimization problem in which an integral constraint restricts the admissible functions. In the classical planar case, it asks which curve encloses the greatest area for a fixed perimeter.

Calculus of variations: A branch of mathematics that finds functions or curves making an integral quantity stationary. It supplies the variational framework for optimizing an integral subject to another integral condition.
Dido's problem: The classical problem of enclosing the greatest area with a fixed-length boundary, often modeled with part of a coastline as a free curve. It is the foundational historical form of an isoperimetric optimization.
Queen Dido: A legendary founder of Carthage associated with a story about acquiring land using a strip of oxhide. Her legend supplied the name and narrative setting for the classical curve-enclosure problem.
Functional: A map whose inputs are functions and whose outputs are numbers. The quantity being optimized is a functional of the admissible curve or function.
Isoperimetric inequality: An inequality bounding a region's volume in terms of the measure of its boundary. The inequality states a global bound; the problem asks for the extremizer attaining it.
Euler–Lagrange equation: A differential equation satisfied by stationary functions of a variational integral. A multiplier converts the constrained problem into an ordinary variational problem governed by this equation.
Circle: The plane curve consisting of all points at a fixed distance from a center. Among planar closed curves of fixed length, it encloses the greatest area.
Virgil: A Roman poet whose epic poem the Aeneid recounts the legendary founding of Carthage. The Aeneid helped transmit the Dido story later associated with the isoperimetric problem.
Constraint qualification: A condition ensuring that constraints behave regularly enough for multiplier-based optimality rules. Regularity assumptions determine whether a multiplier condition applies to the integral constraint.
Lagrange multiplier method: A technique for finding constrained extrema by combining an objective with multiplier-weighted constraints. It handles finite-dimensional constraints directly, while the isoperimetric problem constrains functions through integrals.
