Isoprene

Isoprene is the volatile, unsaturated hydrocarbon 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene. Its five-carbon unit builds natural rubber and many terpenes.

Conjugated diene: A molecule containing two carbon–carbon double bonds separated by one single bond. Isoprene’s conjugated double bonds shape its reactions and polymerization.
Molecular formula: A notation specifying the number of atoms of each element in a molecule. Isoprene’s formula, C₅H₈, captures its compact five-carbon framework.
Natural rubber: An elastic material obtained mainly from the latex of the rubber tree, composed chiefly of cis-1,4-polyisoprene. Its polymer chains are built from isoprene units.
Hermann Staudinger: A German chemist who established the macromolecular theory of polymers and received the 1953 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His work helped explain rubber as a large molecule built from smaller units.
Cationic polymerization: A chain-growth polymerization in which positively charged reactive centers add monomers. Acid-initiated isoprene polymerization can produce rubber-like polymers.
Alkene: A hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. Isoprene is an alkene with two conjugated double bonds.
Synthetic rubber: Man-made elastomers produced through chemical polymerization or copolymerization. Isoprene is a feedstock for synthetic rubber that mimics natural rubber.
Wallace Carothers: An American chemist whose polymer research at DuPont led to nylon and neoprene. His research helped establish synthetic approaches to elastomers related to isoprene rubber.
Polyisoprene: A polymer made from repeating isoprene units, occurring naturally and in synthetic forms. It is the direct polymer product of linking isoprene molecules.
Terpene: A class of compounds assembled biosynthetically from five-carbon isoprene units. Terpenes share isoprene’s five-carbon building pattern.
