Israeli Declaration of Independence

The 1948 proclamation establishing the State of Israel, read by David Ben-Gurion in Tel Aviv on 14 May. It declared statehood and set out historical, political, and civic principles for the new state.

United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine: A 1947 United Nations proposal to divide Mandatory Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem under international administration. Its proposed Jewish state supplied the immediate international framework for declaring Israeli independence.
Minhelet HaAm: The provisional executive body that governed the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine immediately before Israel's establishment. It approved the declaration shortly before the proclamation ceremony.
Jewish people: An ethnoreligious people whose shared identity includes religion, ancestry, history, and cultural traditions. The declaration grounds the claim to statehood in Jewish history and collective identity.
1948 Arab–Israeli War: The war fought in Mandatory Palestine and the surrounding region from 1947 to 1949 between Jewish and Arab forces and neighboring states. Israel's declaration was followed immediately by the entry of neighboring Arab armies into the conflict.
Palestinian Declaration of Independence: A 1988 proclamation by the Palestine National Council declaring the establishment of the State of Palestine. It articulates a Palestinian national claim to statehood in a different historical and political setting.
British Mandate for Palestine: The League of Nations mandate under which Britain administered Palestine from 1920 until its termination in 1948. The declaration took effect as British rule ended and the mandate terminated.
Moetzet HaAm: The provisional representative council that served as the legislature at Israel's founding. Its members signed the declaration and constituted the founding political assembly.
Right of self-determination: The principle that peoples may determine their political status and pursue their economic, social, and cultural development. The proclamation frames statehood as an exercise of national self-determination.
Israeli constitutional law: The body of laws and institutional arrangements governing Israel's constitutional structure and fundamental rights. The declaration is a foundational text, though it is not itself a constitution.
Palestinian right of return: The claimed right of Palestinian refugees and their descendants to return to homes from which they were displaced. It stands in tension with the declaration's promise of Jewish immigration and the realities of Palestinian displacement.
