Issyk-Kul

Issyk-Kul is a large saline lake in northeastern Kyrgyzstan, enclosed by the Tian Shan mountains. It has no outlet to the sea and remains unfrozen through much of the winter.

Endorheic basin: A drainage basin whose rivers and streams do not reach an ocean. Issyk-Kul’s basin traps incoming water, leaving evaporation as its main natural loss.
Water balance: The accounting of water entering and leaving a system over a given period. Issyk-Kul’s level reflects river and precipitation inputs balanced mainly against evaporation.
Tectonic basin: A depression formed or shaped by movements of Earth’s crust. Crustal deformation created the deep mountain basin that holds Issyk-Kul.
Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve: A UNESCO biosphere reserve encompassing Issyk-Kul and surrounding landscapes in Kyrgyzstan. The reserve provides a framework for conserving the lake’s ecosystems and human communities.
Cholpon-Ata: A resort town on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. Its beaches, resorts, and cultural sites concentrate tourism on the lake’s northern coast.
Saline lake: An inland lake whose water contains substantially more dissolved salts than freshwater. Dissolved salts distinguish Issyk-Kul from nearby freshwater mountain lakes.
Evaporation: The change of liquid water into vapor at a surface. Evaporation removes water but leaves most dissolved salts behind in the lake.
Tien Shan orogeny: The mountain-building history that uplifted the Tian Shan through tectonic deformation. The uplift of the Tian Shan shaped the lake’s setting and drainage boundaries.
Issyk-Kul trout: A locally named trout associated with Issyk-Kul, including introduced and cultivated forms. Fish populations connect the lake to local food systems and fisheries management.
Karakol: A city near the eastern end of Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. Karakol anchors settlement and travel in the lake’s eastern basin.
