Isthmus of Perekop

The narrow land bridge connecting the Crimean Peninsula to mainland Ukraine, between the Black Sea and the Sivash lagoons of the Sea of Azov.

Crimean Peninsula: A peninsula in the northern Black Sea, connected to mainland Ukraine by the Isthmus of Perekop. Perekop forms the peninsula’s sole land connection to the mainland.
Siege of Perekop (1736): A Russian assault that captured Ottoman defenses at Perekop during the Russo-Turkish War of 1735–1739. The campaign demonstrated the strategic value of the isthmus’s fortified approaches.
Sea of Azov: A shallow sea connected to the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait. Its western edge meets the Sivash lagoons beside the isthmus.
Crimean Tatars: A Turkic people indigenous to Crimea, with a distinct language, culture, and history. Their khanate and communities shaped the region’s history around this passage.
