Italian city-states

Independent or semi-independent urban polities that dominated much of medieval and Renaissance Italy. They governed surrounding territories and competed through trade, diplomacy, and warfare.

Commune: A self-governing urban community, especially one formed in medieval Europe. Communes supplied the civic institutions from which many Italian city-states developed.
Republic of Venice: A maritime republic centered on Venice that endured from the medieval period until 1797. Venice built an unusually durable republic and a far-reaching maritime empire.
Peace of Lodi: A 1454 agreement that ended a major phase of warfare among Italian powers and helped establish a balance of power. It stabilized relations among leading states through negotiated territorial arrangements.
Medici: A Florentine family whose banking wealth and political influence made it a major force in Renaissance Italy. The Medici demonstrate how commercial fortunes could become political and cultural power.
Signoria: A form of government in which a lord or ruling family held power over a city. Signorie replaced or reshaped communal rule in several major cities.
Republic of Florence: A Tuscan republic whose government and fortunes were shaped by civic factions and powerful families. Florence combined republican institutions with the rise of Medici dominance.
Italian Wars: A series of conflicts from 1494 to 1559 in which European powers fought for control of Italy. Foreign invasions exposed the city-states’ vulnerability to larger monarchies.
Banking in medieval Italy: Financial practices and institutions developed by Italian merchants, including bills of exchange and deposit banking. Urban commerce and finance supplied resources for both government and patronage.
Podestà: A chief magistrate, often hired from another city to govern an Italian commune. The podestà offered an institutional answer to factional conflict within communes.
Duchy of Milan: A northern Italian duchy ruled by the Visconti and later the Sforza dynasties. Milan illustrates how a city-state could become a powerful territorial principality.
