Italian diaspora

The Italian diaspora is the migration and settlement of Italians and their descendants outside Italy, shaped by successive movements before and after Italian unification.

Italian unification: The political process that unified most Italian states into the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Unification preceded mass emigration and reshaped the new state's relationship with its emigrants.
Italian Americans: People in the United States who identify with Italian ancestry or heritage. They form one of the largest and most influential Italian-descended populations abroad.
Chain migration: Migration in which earlier migrants help relatives or acquaintances move to the same destination. Family and village ties lowered the cost and uncertainty of later Italian migration.
Italian remittances to Italy: Money sent to Italy by people who had migrated abroad. These transfers became a major source of household income and foreign currency.
Italian identity: A sense of belonging associated with Italy, its people, language, history, or culture. Diaspora communities have continually reinterpreted what Italian belonging means beyond Italy.
Italian emigration: The movement of people from Italy to settle in other countries. This migration is the central movement behind the diaspora.
Italian Argentines: Argentines of Italian ancestry, descended largely from migration between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Argentina received a particularly large share of Italian emigrants.
Remittances: Money that migrants send to people in their country or community of origin. Funds sent to Italy supported households and linked migrants to places they had left.
Italian cuisine abroad: Food traditions derived from Italian regional cooking and adapted in communities outside Italy. Migration spread regional dishes while changing them through local ingredients and tastes.
Hyphenated identity: An identity that combines a national or ethnic heritage with another cultural or civic affiliation. Labels such as Italian-American express the layered identities formed through settlement.
