Italian Empire

Italy’s overseas colonies and imperial possessions, acquired mainly from the late nineteenth century through World War II. Its territories included Libya, Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, Ethiopia, and the Dodecanese.

Italian unification: The political process that united most of the Italian peninsula as the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. The new kingdom’s search for status and territory helped drive its turn toward colonial expansion.
Italian Eritrea: The Italian colony on the Red Sea coast of Africa, established in 1890 and occupied by Britain in 1941. Eritrea became Italy’s first formal African colony and a base for expansion in the region.
Italian colonial troops: Military units recruited in Italy’s colonies, including Eritrean askari and Somali soldiers serving under Italian command. Colonial troops helped Italy conquer and police territories across Africa.
Second Italo-Ethiopian War: Italy’s 1935–1936 invasion and conquest of Ethiopia, followed by armed resistance and occupation. The war produced the empire’s largest territorial expansion and exposed its reliance on force.
British Empire: The global system of territories and dependencies ruled or controlled by Britain, at its height spanning continents. Britain’s larger empire became Italy’s rival and later took control of several Italian possessions.
Scramble for Africa: The late nineteenth-century partition and conquest of African territories by European powers. Italian ambitions developed amid competition with other European colonial powers in Africa.
Italian Somaliland: The Italian-administered territory in southern Somalia, formally organized as a colony in 1908. It shows how Italian rule developed through coastal concessions and gradual territorial consolidation.
Italian settlement in Libya: The organized migration of Italian settlers to Libya, promoted by the Fascist regime from the 1920s onward. Settlement aimed to make Libya an enduring Italian possession and transformed land use and population patterns.
Italian war crimes in Ethiopia: Violations of the laws and customs of war committed by Italian forces during the invasion and occupation of Ethiopia. Chemical weapons and reprisals reveal the coercion behind Italy’s claimed imperial rule.
French colonial empire: The overseas empire built by France through conquest, settlement, and administration across multiple continents. France’s established African presence framed Italy’s competition for territory and influence.
