Italian Eritrea

Italian Eritrea was the Italian colony established in 1890 in the territory of present-day Eritrea. It ended in 1941, when British forces took control during World War II.

Assab: A port on Eritrea’s Red Sea coast, acquired by Italy in 1882 and later incorporated into the colony. Italy’s purchase of Assab began its sustained presence on the Red Sea coast.
Italian colonial empire: The territories Italy controlled overseas, including possessions in Africa and the Mediterranean. Eritrea became one of Italy’s earliest and longest-held African possessions.
Francesco Crispi: Italian prime minister who promoted colonial expansion in the Horn of Africa in the late nineteenth century. His government supported the military and diplomatic policies that consolidated Italian rule.

Italian colonialism: Italy’s pursuit of overseas territories and rule over colonized populations, especially from the late nineteenth century onward. Its institutions and racial hierarchies shaped administration and daily life in Eritrea.
Giuseppe Sapeto: An Italian missionary and explorer who helped secure the acquisition of Assab for Italy. His role connected early Italian commercial ambitions at Assab to later colonial expansion.
Italian East Africa: The Italian colonial possession formed in 1936 from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Italian Somaliland. The colony was absorbed into this larger empire after Italy conquered Ethiopia.
Battle of Adwa: The 1896 battle in which Ethiopian forces defeated an invading Italian army. The defeat checked Italy’s expansion into Ethiopia while leaving its Eritrean colony intact.
Asmara: The capital of Eritrea, developed as a major administrative and urban center under Italian rule. Colonial authorities made Asmara the colony’s administrative center and reshaped its urban landscape.
