Italian fascism

Italian fascism was an authoritarian nationalist movement and ideology that arose after World War I. Under Benito Mussolini, it governed Italy from 1922 to 1943.

National Fascist Party: Italy’s ruling fascist party, founded by Benito Mussolini in 1921 and dissolved after his regime fell. It organized fascist supporters into the party that ruled Italy.
Biennio Rosso: The “two red years” of 1919–1920, marked by strikes, factory occupations, and rural unrest in Italy. The upheaval intensified fears of revolution that fascists exploited.
Benito Mussolini: An Italian journalist and politician who led the National Fascist Party and ruled Italy as dictator from 1922 to 1943. He founded the movement’s governing leadership and embodied its personal dictatorship.
Socialism: A family of political and economic ideas advocating social or collective ownership and control of productive resources. Fascists attacked socialist class politics and labor movements while claiming to transcend class conflict.
Lateran Treaty: The 1929 agreement between Italy and the Holy See that recognized Vatican City and settled disputes between church and state. It secured an accommodation with the Catholic Church and strengthened the regime’s legitimacy.
March on Rome: The October 1922 mobilization of fascist squads that pressured Italy’s king to appoint Mussolini prime minister. It brought Mussolini to power without a direct seizure of Rome.
Italian nationalism: A political movement promoting national unity, sovereignty, and power in Italy. Fascism drew on nationalist claims that Italy had been denied its rightful status.
Giacomo Matteotti: An Italian socialist politician murdered by fascists in 1924 after denouncing election violence and fraud. His killing triggered a crisis that exposed the regime’s political violence.
Liberal democracy: A political system combining competitive elections, civil liberties, and limits on government power. Fascism rejected liberal pluralism and dismantled Italy’s constitutional checks.
Italian racial laws: Laws introduced by Italy’s fascist regime in 1938 that stripped Jews of rights and excluded them from public life. They marked the regime’s adoption of antisemitic discrimination under growing Nazi influence.
