Italian Front (World War I)

The World War I theater in which Italy fought Austria-Hungary, chiefly across the Alpine border and along the Isonzo River. Its mountain terrain and repeated offensives produced a prolonged war of attrition.

Battles of the Isonzo: A series of twelve battles fought between Italy and Austria-Hungary along the Isonzo River from 1915 to 1917. Repeated Italian attacks against prepared positions defined the front’s central sector.
Treaty of London: The 1915 secret agreement in which Italy promised to join the Entente in exchange for territorial gains after the war. It secured Italy’s entry into the war against Austria-Hungary.
First Battle of the Isonzo: The first Italian offensive against Austro-Hungarian positions along the Isonzo River, fought from June to July 1915. It established the pattern of costly attacks against strong defensive positions.
Luigi Cadorna: An Italian general who served as chief of the army’s general staff from 1914 until after the Caporetto defeat. His leadership directed the early offensives and became closely tied to their heavy losses.
Armistice of Villa Giusti: The armistice signed between Italy and Austria-Hungary on 3 November 1918, taking effect the following day. It formally ended fighting between the two states on the Italian Front.
Battle of Caporetto: A Central Powers offensive in October 1917 that broke the Italian line near Caporetto and forced a retreat to the Piave River. Its breakthrough transformed the front and drove Italy back hundreds of kilometers.

Armando Diaz: An Italian general who became chief of the general staff after Caporetto and led the army through victory in 1918. He reorganized the army after the retreat and commanded it at Vittorio Veneto.
Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye: The 1919 peace treaty between the Allies and Austria that dissolved the Habsburg monarchy and transferred territory to Italy. It put many Italian wartime territorial claims into effect.
