Itō Hirobumi

Itō Hirobumi (1841–1909) was a Japanese statesman who became Japan’s first prime minister and helped create its Meiji-era constitutional government.

Meiji Restoration: The 1868 political transformation that ended the Tokugawa shogunate and restored imperial rule in Japan. Itō joined the leaders who built a centralized state after the shogunate fell.
Meiji Constitution: Japan’s 1889 constitution, which established an imperial state with a parliament and defined governmental institutions. Itō led the constitutional commission and helped draft this framework.
Chōshū Domain: A feudal domain in western Japan whose leaders played a major role in overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate. Itō’s political and military formation began in this domain.
Japanese annexation of Korea: Japan’s 1910 incorporation of Korea as a colony, ending the Korean Empire’s sovereignty. Itō’s administration helped establish the protectorate and political control that preceded annexation.
Kuroda Kiyotaka: A Japanese statesman who served as prime minister from 1888 to 1889. He succeeded Itō as prime minister during the creation of Japan’s constitutional system.

Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905: A treaty that made Korea a Japanese protectorate and transferred control of its foreign affairs to Japan. Itō served as Japan’s resident-general in Korea when the treaty was imposed.
Yamagata Aritomo: A Japanese military and political leader who helped shape the modern imperial army and government. He was a powerful contemporary and political rival within Meiji leadership.
Privy Council of Japan: An advisory body to Japan’s emperor, established in 1888 to review constitutional and major state matters. Itō founded and presided over the council that reviewed the constitution.
