Ivan the Terrible

Ivan IV was the first Russian ruler crowned tsar, reigning from 1547 to 1584. He expanded Muscovy’s territory and centralized royal authority through reforms, conquest, and political terror.

Oprichnina: A system of territorial division, confiscation, and political violence imposed by Ivan IV from 1565 to 1572. It was Ivan’s most notorious instrument for breaking elite opposition and asserting personal control.
Kazan Khanate: A Turkic Muslim state on the middle Volga, conquered by Ivan IV’s forces in 1552. Its capture opened the Volga corridor to Russian expansion and became a defining victory of Ivan’s reign.
Vasily III of Russia: Grand Prince of Moscow from 1505 to 1533 and father of Ivan IV. His death left Ivan a child ruler and began the regency politics of Ivan’s youth.
Metropolitan Macarius: Head of the Russian Orthodox Church from 1542 to 1563 and a major religious adviser to Ivan IV. He supported the coronation and helped articulate the sacred authority of Ivan’s monarchy.
Ivan III of Russia: Grand Prince of Moscow from 1462 to 1505 who expanded Muscovy and ended its tribute to the Golden Horde. He began major centralizing expansion before Ivan IV adopted the title of tsar.
Zemsky Sobor: An assembly of representatives from major social groups convened by Russian rulers to advise on state affairs. Ivan used such assemblies to consult elites while strengthening central authority.
Astrakhan Khanate: A state centered on the lower Volga, annexed by Muscovy in 1556. Its annexation completed Russian control of the Volga and widened Ivan’s southern reach.
Elena Glinskaya: Regent of Muscovy from 1533 to 1538 and mother of Ivan IV. Her brief regency preceded the boyar struggles that shaped Ivan’s formative years.
Andrey Kurbsky: A Russian prince and military commander who defected to Lithuania in 1564 and exchanged letters with Ivan IV. Their correspondence offers a rare direct debate over Ivan’s authority and treatment of the elite.
Peter the Great: Russian ruler from 1682 to 1725 who transformed the state and adopted the title of emperor. His later program of state expansion offers a distinct model of Russian autocracy and modernization.
