Izu Islands

The Izu Islands are a volcanic island chain in the Philippine Sea, extending south from Japan’s Izu Peninsula and administered by Tokyo.

Izu Peninsula: A peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, projecting south into the Pacific Ocean. The island chain begins offshore from this peninsula.
Izu Ōshima: The largest and most populous of the Izu Islands, dominated by the active volcano Mount Mihara. It is the chain’s best-known inhabited volcanic island.
Subduction: The descent of one tectonic plate beneath another into Earth’s mantle. Pacific Plate subduction supplies the geological setting for Izu volcanism.
Tōkai Kisen: A Japanese ferry company operating passenger routes between Tokyo and the Izu Islands. Its ships provide a major transport link between the islands and the mainland.
Ogasawara Islands: A remote Japanese archipelago in the Pacific, south of the Izu Islands and administered by Tokyo. They share Tokyo administration but lie farther south and form a separate island group.
Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc: A volcanic island arc formed above the Pacific Plate’s subduction beneath the Philippine Sea Plate. The Izu Islands form the northern part of this larger volcanic arc.
Toshima: A small inhabited volcanic island in the Izu Islands, known for its steep slopes and camellia groves. Its compact settlement and distinctive vegetation contrast with larger islands.
Volcanic arc: A curved chain of volcanoes formed above a subduction zone. The islands are individual volcanic peaks within an arc.
Hachijō Airport: An airport on Hachijō-jima serving scheduled flights between the island and Tokyo. Air service offers a faster alternative to the long sea journey.
Daitō Islands: A Japanese island group in the Philippine Sea, southeast of Okinawa and administered by Okinawa Prefecture. Their location in the same sea can obscure their distinct geography and administration.
