J. G. Ballard

J. G. Ballard (1930–2009) was a British novelist and short-story writer whose science fiction and experimental fiction explored psychological change, technology, and modern environments.

The Drowned World: A 1962 novel in which rising temperatures transform London into a tropical lagoon and reshape its inhabitants’ minds. This early disaster novel established the environmental and psychological concerns that recur throughout Ballard’s fiction.
Shanghai: A major Chinese port city that was an international settlement and Japanese-occupied city during Ballard’s childhood. Ballard’s early years in Shanghai supplied settings and experiences later transformed in his fiction.
Michael Moorcock: A British writer and editor whose work helped transform science fiction and fantasy after the 1950s. As editor of New Worlds, Moorcock published and championed Ballard’s experimental fiction.
Crash (1996 film): A 1996 film directed by David Cronenberg and adapted from Ballard’s novel Crash. Cronenberg’s adaptation gives a distinct cinematic form to the novel’s fusion of desire and automotive technology.
