J. L. Austin

John Langshaw Austin (1911–1960) was a British philosopher of language who developed speech act theory and used close analysis of ordinary language to investigate philosophical problems.

Speech act: An utterance understood as an action performed through language. Austin’s central framework treats saying things as a way of doing things.
Locutionary act: The act of producing a meaningful linguistic expression. Austin distinguishes the utterance’s meaningful content from its force and effects.
Oxford philosophy: A tradition of philosophical work associated with Oxford University and its changing methods. Austin developed his approach within Oxford’s mid-century philosophical community.
Gilbert Ryle: A British analytic philosopher who edited the journal Mind and taught at Oxford. Ryle was Austin’s Oxford colleague and helped foster the philosophical setting in which their discussions took place.
John Searle’s speech act theory: A systematic account of speech acts that classifies their forms and specifies rules for their performance. Searle developed Austin’s framework into a more explicit theory of conventions and illocutionary acts.
Performative utterance: An utterance that performs an action rather than merely describing a state of affairs. Austin introduced this category to distinguish acts such as promising from factual statements.
Perlocutionary act: An effect achieved by speaking, such as persuading, frightening, or amusing someone. It completes Austin’s three-part account of what happens in speaking.
Ludwig Wittgenstein: An Austrian-British philosopher whose later work examined meaning through language use and forms of life. Wittgenstein’s later philosophy shared Austin’s resistance to treating meaning as detached from use.
Peter F. Strawson: A British analytic philosopher whose work included the analysis of reference, presupposition, and ordinary language. Strawson extended and criticized themes in Austin’s approach to language.
Pragmatics: The study of how context contributes to the interpretation and use of language. Austin’s focus on utterances as actions helped shape pragmatic approaches to meaning.
