J. Michael Kosterlitz

J. Michael Kosterlitz is a British-American theoretical physicist whose work with David Thouless established how topological defects drive phase transitions in two-dimensional systems.

David J. Thouless: David J. Thouless was a British physicist who made foundational contributions to condensed-matter physics and topological phase transitions. Kosterlitz and Thouless jointly developed the theory of the transition that bears both their names.
Kosterlitz–Thouless transition: A topological phase transition in two dimensions driven by the binding and unbinding of vortex–antivortex pairs. This transition is the central result of Kosterlitz’s work with Thouless.
Renormalization group: A mathematical framework for tracking how a system’s effective description changes with scale. Kosterlitz and Thouless used scale-dependent flows to establish the transition’s mechanism.
