J’Accuse…!

An open letter Émile Zola published in 1898 accusing French military and political leaders of antisemitism and injustice in the Dreyfus affair. Its intervention intensified public debate and led to Zola’s prosecution for libel.

Dreyfus affair: A political scandal in France, beginning in 1894, over the wrongful conviction of Jewish army officer Alfred Dreyfus for treason. The wrongful conviction and its cover-up prompted Zola to write the letter.
