Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper is the name given to an unidentified killer who murdered at least five women in London’s Whitechapel district in 1888.

Mary Ann Nichols: Mary Ann Nichols was a woman murdered in Whitechapel on 31 August 1888, widely considered the first canonical victim. Her murder is generally treated as the opening crime in the canonical sequence.
Whitechapel murders: The Whitechapel murders were a series of attacks on women in London’s East End from 1888 to 1891. The Ripper murders form the most famous, but not the entirety, of this series.
Frederick Abberline: Frederick Abberline was a Metropolitan Police inspector who investigated the Whitechapel murders. He was among the principal detectives assigned to the case.
Metropolitan Police: The Metropolitan Police is the police force responsible for law enforcement in most of London. Its detectives investigated most canonical murders, which occurred within its jurisdiction.

Annie Chapman: Annie Chapman was murdered in Whitechapel on 8 September 1888, the second canonical victim. Her death intensified public alarm and shaped early descriptions of the killer.
Whitechapel: Whitechapel is a district in London’s East End that was a densely populated working-class area in the nineteenth century. Its streets and social conditions formed the setting for the canonical murders.
Donald Swanson: Donald Swanson was a senior Metropolitan Police officer who supervised the investigation into the Whitechapel murders. His surviving notes record police thinking about suspects and investigative limits.
City of London Police: The City of London Police is the police force responsible for law enforcement in the City of London. It investigated Eddowes’s murder, creating a jurisdictional division within the case.
Tabloid journalism: Tabloid journalism presents news in a mass-market style, often using sensational headlines and concise stories. The case helped demonstrate the commercial power of crime coverage for a broad public.
