Jack W. Szostak

Jack W. Szostak is an American biochemist whose research spans telomeres, RNA, and the origins of life. He shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries about how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.

Elizabeth Blackburn: An Australian-American molecular biologist who helped discover telomerase and shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She and Szostak showed that telomere sequences protect chromosome ends.
Telomere: A repetitive DNA-protein structure at a chromosome’s end that helps protect it from degradation and fusion. Szostak and Blackburn demonstrated that telomeric DNA sequences protect chromosome ends.
