Jacobus Arminius

Jacobus Arminius (1560–1609) was a Dutch Reformed theologian who challenged strict Calvinist accounts of predestination. His teachings on grace and human freedom inspired the Remonstrant movement and Arminianism.

Predestination: The doctrine that God determines the ultimate fate of human beings, especially their salvation or damnation. Arminius rejected unconditional predestination as the basis of individual salvation.
Beeldenstorm: The wave of Protestant iconoclasm that swept through the Low Countries in 1566. It formed part of the religious upheaval in which Arminius grew up.
John Calvin: A French Reformation theologian whose writings shaped Reformed Protestant theology. Arminius's disagreement concerned later Calvinist readings of predestination, not a direct personal rivalry.

Theodore Beza: A French Reformed theologian and Geneva Academy leader who succeeded John Calvin. Arminius studied under Beza in Geneva before later disputing strict Calvinist predestination.
