Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet

Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627–1704) was a French Catholic bishop, theologian, and orator. His works defended providential monarchy and articulated the doctrine of Gallican liberties.

Divine right of kings: A doctrine holding that a monarch’s authority comes from God and is not answerable to earthly subjects. Bossuet gave this doctrine a prominent theological defense in France.
