Jacques Piccard

Jacques Piccard (1922–2008) was a Swiss oceanographer and deep-sea explorer who co-piloted the bathyscaphe Trieste to the Challenger Deep in 1960.

Trieste: A bathyscaphe that descended to the Challenger Deep in 1960 with Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh aboard. Piccard co-piloted this vessel on its historic descent.
Bathyscaphe: A self-propelled deep-sea submersible that uses a buoyant float and a pressure-resistant crew sphere. Piccard’s deep-sea explorations depended on this class of vehicle.
Lausanne: A city in western Switzerland on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. Piccard was born and educated in Switzerland, where his career began.
