Jainism

Jainism is an Indian religion that teaches liberation of the soul through right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct. Its distinctive ethical commitments include nonviolence and non-possessiveness.

Ahimsa: Ahimsa is the principle of avoiding harm to living beings in thought, speech, and action. Jainism gives nonviolence an unusually comprehensive role in daily practice.
Samvara: Samvara is the Jain process of stopping new karma from binding to the soul. Restraint and vigilance prevent fresh karmic matter from accumulating.
Mahavira: Mahavira was the twenty-fourth Tirthankara of the present Jain time cycle and a central teacher of Jainism. Jain tradition associates his teaching and community with the religion’s historical formation.
Buddhism: Buddhism is an Indian-origin religion that teaches liberation from suffering and rebirth without positing a permanent self. Its rejection of a permanent self contrasts with Jainism’s enduring individual souls.
Anekantavada: Anekantavada is the Jain doctrine that reality has many aspects and cannot be fully described from one viewpoint. Its account of partial perspectives shapes Jain reasoning and tolerance of qualified claims.
Nirjara: Nirjara is the Jain process of shedding karma already bound to the soul. Ascetic discipline is understood to burn away accumulated karma.
Parshvanatha: Parshvanatha is the twenty-third Tirthankara, whom Jain tradition places before Mahavira. His remembered community offers evidence of Jain traditions preceding Mahavira.
Hinduism: Hinduism is a diverse family of Indian religious traditions encompassing varied philosophies, practices, and scriptures. Jainism shares Indian concepts such as karma and rebirth while rejecting some Hindu authorities and doctrines.
Aparigraha: Aparigraha is the ethical principle of non-possessiveness and limiting attachment to material things. It turns Jainism’s critique of attachment into a practical vow.
Moksha in Jainism: Moksha in Jainism is the soul’s liberation from karma and the cycle of rebirth. It is the final goal toward which Jain disciplines are directed.
