Jakob Böhme

Jakob Böhme (1575–1624) was a German Christian mystic and theosopher whose writings described divine nature, creation, and evil through a distinctive language of opposing principles.

Theosophy: A tradition of speculative religious thought seeking knowledge of divine realities and their relation to nature. Böhme used theosophy to describe how divine life unfolds into the created world.
Ungrund: Böhme’s name for the divine abyss or groundless source preceding determinate being. It names the unknowable source from which Böhme’s account of divine manifestation begins.
Görlitz: A historic city on the Neisse River, now divided between Germany and Poland. Böhme lived and worked in Görlitz, where his writings provoked local religious controversy.
Abraham von Franckenberg: A Silesian nobleman and mystic who collected and promoted Böhme’s writings after his death. Franckenberg helped preserve Böhme’s manuscripts and establish his posthumous reputation.
Philadelphians: A seventeenth-century English religious group influenced by Böhme and led by John Pordage and Jane Lead. The Philadelphians turned Böhme’s ideas into a collective religious movement.
Christian mysticism: Christian traditions centered on direct experience or contemplative knowledge of God. His writings belong to a mystical tradition while developing an unusually elaborate cosmology.
Seven qualities: Böhme’s sequence of spiritual principles describing the emergence of divine and natural life. These qualities provide his recurring scheme for how the divine becomes manifest.
Aurora (Jakob Böhme): Jakob Böhme’s early work, written in 1612 and also known as The Morning Redness in the Rising Sun. This first major manuscript already contains the cosmological ideas that drew authorities’ attention.
Johann Georg Gichtel: A German religious writer who edited and disseminated Böhme’s works in the seventeenth century. Gichtel’s editions made Böhme’s writings more accessible to later readers.
Radical Pietism: A Protestant movement emphasizing inward devotion, spiritual renewal, and criticism of established churches. Böhme’s writings became resources for Pietists seeking experiential forms of religious life.
