James Black

James Whyte Black (1924–2010) was a Scottish pharmacologist who developed propranolol and cimetidine and shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Raymond Ahlquist: An American pharmacologist who proposed that adrenergic receptors comprise distinct alpha and beta types. Ahlquist’s receptor classification gave Black the framework for designing beta-blocking drugs.
Beta blocker: A drug that blocks beta-adrenergic receptors, reducing effects such as increased heart rate and cardiac workload. Propranolol was the first clinically useful drug in this class.
Propranolol: A nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker used to treat cardiovascular conditions and other disorders. Black developed this landmark beta blocker for angina and other heart conditions.
University of St Andrews: A Scottish university founded in 1413 and the oldest university in Scotland. Black earned his medical degree there in 1946.
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: An annual international award recognizing discoveries that have substantially advanced physiology or medicine. Black received the 1988 prize with Gertrude Elion and John Vane.
George Rieveschl: An American chemist who led the development of the antihistamine drug diphenhydramine. Black studied medicinal chemistry with Rieveschl during his postdoctoral training.
H2 receptor antagonist: A drug that blocks histamine H2 receptors, reducing acid secretion by the stomach. Cimetidine established this class by targeting the receptor Black’s team identified.
Cimetidine: A histamine H2 receptor antagonist that reduces stomach acid production. Black’s team developed it as a treatment for peptic ulcers.
University of Glasgow: A public research university in Glasgow, Scotland, founded in 1451. Black established an early research group in veterinary physiology there.
Beta-adrenergic receptor: A cell-surface receptor activated by adrenaline and noradrenaline that regulates functions including heart activity. Black’s drug design helped establish these receptors as practical therapeutic targets.
