James Brooke

James Brooke (1803–1868) was a British adventurer who became the first White Rajah of Sarawak, ruling from 1841 until his death.

Sarawak: A region on the northwest coast of Borneo, now part of the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Its government and territory formed the basis of Brooke’s rule.
White Rajahs: The Brooke family rulers who governed Sarawak as hereditary monarchs from 1841 to 1946. Brooke began the dynasty that made his personal rule hereditary.
Charles Brooke: The second White Rajah of Sarawak, who succeeded James Brooke in 1868. His succession carried forward the dynasty James established.
Charles Darwin: An English naturalist who developed the theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin’s public criticism challenged Brooke’s account of his campaigns against piracy.
Brunei Sultanate: A monarchy whose historical domains once included much of Borneo’s northwest coast. The sultanate granted Brooke authority over Sarawak amid succession disputes and rebellion.
Sarawak militias: Armed forces recruited in Sarawak, including Malay and Indigenous fighters, for local campaigns. Brooke relied on local forces as well as European allies to maintain control.
John Brooke Johnson Brooke: James Brooke’s nephew and intended successor, later known as Brooke Brooke. A dispute over succession separated him from James’s chosen line of inheritance.
Joseph Hume: A British politician known for scrutinizing public expenditure and government conduct. He pressed Parliament to investigate the use of British naval power in Sarawak.
Borneo: An island in Southeast Asia shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. The island’s coastal politics shaped Brooke’s opportunities and limits.
Brunei Civil War: A nineteenth-century conflict over succession and authority in the Brunei Sultanate. The rebellion in Sarawak arose within the wider crisis of Bruneian rule.
