James Buchanan

James Buchanan was the 15th president of the United States, serving from 1857 to 1861. His administration preceded the Civil War and failed to prevent the secession crisis.

Dred Scott v. Sandford: An 1857 Supreme Court decision that denied Black people national citizenship and restricted Congress’s power over slavery in the territories. Buchanan endorsed the decision before it was announced, deepening sectional conflict.
Abraham Lincoln: The 16th U.S. president, who led the Union during the Civil War and issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln succeeded Buchanan as the secession crisis became war.
