James Busby

James Busby (1801–1871) was a British official who served as New Zealand’s first British Resident. He helped draft the 1835 Declaration of Independence and the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi.

Hone Heke: A Ngāpuhi rangatira who became a prominent opponent of British authority in the 1840s. Heke signed the Declaration of Independence but later challenged the authority Busby helped establish.
Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand: A 1835 declaration by a confederation of Māori chiefs asserting the independence of New Zealand. Busby helped draft this declaration and encouraged chiefs to adopt it.
British Resident: A British diplomatic representative stationed in a territory without formal colonial government. Busby held this post in New Zealand from 1833, with little direct authority to enforce decisions.

Waitangi Tribunal: A permanent commission of inquiry that investigates claims concerning breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi. The tribunal examines the treaty Busby helped draft and its continuing consequences.
William Hobson: A British naval officer who became New Zealand’s first governor in 1840. Hobson worked with Busby on the treaty and the transition to British sovereignty.
Flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand: A flag selected in 1834 by Māori chiefs associated with the United Tribes of New Zealand. Busby organized the flag’s selection to enable Māori vessels to be recognized internationally.
