James Clerk Maxwell

James Clerk Maxwell was a Scottish physicist and mathematician whose theory of electromagnetism unified electricity, magnetism, and light. His work also advanced kinetic theory, thermodynamics, and color photography.

Electromagnetic field: A physical field describing how electric charges and currents influence space and interact with matter. Maxwell treated electric and magnetic effects as aspects of a field spread through space.
Maxwell's equations: A set of four equations describing how electric and magnetic fields arise and change in response to charges and currents. They state the unified field theory Maxwell developed across his work.
Michael Faraday: An English experimental scientist whose discoveries included electromagnetic induction and the concept of lines of force. Faraday’s field intuitions strongly influenced Maxwell’s mathematical account of electromagnetism.
Kinetic theory of gases: A model explaining gas properties through the motion and statistical behavior of microscopic particles. Maxwell derived a probability distribution for molecular speeds, a foundation of the theory.
Special relativity: Einstein’s 1905 theory of space and time, built around the invariance of physical laws and the speed of light. The tension between Maxwell’s equations and classical mechanics helped motivate Einstein’s theory.
Faraday's law of induction: A law stating that a changing magnetic flux induces an electromotive force around a circuit. Maxwell translated Faraday’s experimentally grounded induction ideas into mathematical theory.
Displacement current: A term in Ampère’s law accounting for changing electric fields as a source of magnetic fields. It completed the symmetry of the field equations and made electromagnetic waves possible.
William Thomson: A mathematical physicist later known as Lord Kelvin, influential in nineteenth-century British physics. Thomson’s work on heat and field analogies shaped the scientific setting in which Maxwell developed his theories.
Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution: A probability distribution for particle speeds in a classical gas at thermal equilibrium. Maxwell’s 1860 derivation described the spread of molecular speeds in a gas.
Quantum electrodynamics: The quantum field theory describing interactions between charged particles and electromagnetic radiation. It extends the classical electromagnetic framework Maxwell helped establish.
