James H. Billington

James H. Billington was an American historian of Russian history and culture who served as Librarian of Congress from 1987 to 2015.

Library of Congress: The research library of the United States Congress and the nation’s largest library. Billington led the institution for nearly three decades as its Librarian.
American Memory: A Library of Congress digital collection of historical documents, photographs, recordings, and other materials. Billington championed this early effort to make the library’s collections available online.
